The White Heron:
My Prediction
A White Heron By Sarah Orne, is a short story with two sections. So far we have only read the first section and I am about to summarize what we have read so far to then explain what I predict what will happen in the second section.
The first section is about a girl named Sylvia that is wandering in the woods with her “pet” cow. While in the forest, she stumbled across a hunter. At first she was afraid of the man, but it turned out that he was actually a really nice guy. All he was looking for was a place to stay for the night. Sylvia took him to her family to ask them if the man could stay. At first it seemed as if his request was going to be declined, but they eventually gave him a place to stay. He then told them how he loved birds, and because of this he would kill and stuff the birds he wanted. He was looking for a white heron, and the thing was that Sylvia knew where he could find one, but she did not know if she wanted to tell him.
My prediction is that Sylvia will tell the hunter where the white heron is, but will try and convince him to not kill the bird. I also believe that she will tell him that if he really loved birds he would not kill them, but let them live.” Sylvia would have liked him vastly better without his gun; she could not understand why he killed the very birds he seemed to like so much.” I got my idea from this quote itself. Although I do think that she is going to stop him from killing the heron, it will be very hard at first, but I am convinced she will succeed. Even though I can only find one quote that supports my prediction, I believe this a small idea can become an enormous one if it is planted in Sylvia’s head.

Power:

Similar Lives
Cheryl Strayed and Adrienne Marie Curie have much in common. They both are strongly motivated, sacrifice part of themselves and endure physical pain. Physical pain and sacrifice can be found throughout Wild and “Power”. Wild is about a young woman who loses her mother to cancer, and decides to hike the PCT. (Pacific Crest Trail) “Power” is a poem about a woman named Marie Curie that discovers two elements, Radium and Polonium.
In Wild the main character Cheryl Strayed constantly suffers from physical pain. Throughout the book she always talks about how she is suffering and tired. The reason she is constantly injured is because she decided to take a really long hike that contains mountains with a variety of terrains, with desert and snow being two of them. Not only does she have to hike a long distance, but she is carrying a backpack that is more than half her weight.:
“I’d thought I’d weep tears of cathartic sorrow and restorative joy each day of my journey. Instead I only moaned, and not because my heart ached. It was because my feet did and my back did and so did the still-open wounds all around my hips.” (Strayed 85)
In this quote she says what the hike and her backpack have done to her so far. Because she faces a challenge for her physical fitness, her body is constantly injured.
The poem “Power” is about a woman named Marie Curie that discovers two elements that she discovered. At that time there was only one element that was known that was radioactive, uranium. She found something that was called pitchblende. It turned out that this material was radioactive but did not have any trace of uranium, therefore she came up with the conclusion that there must be another element in pitchblende that is radioactive. She actually found two radioactive elements in pitchblende. She was fascinated by this discovery so she extracted the elements. Since she had to work with radiation, she was killing herself in doing so.:
“the source of the cataracts on her eyes, (11)
the cracked and suppurating skin of her finger-ends, (12)
till she could no longer hold a test-tube or a pencil.” (11-13)
Theses quotes tell us how the elements Radium and Polonium destroyed Marie’s body. She became blind and her fingers were suppurating. She was becoming into nothing. Her body was turning into an empty carcass that would have no physical capability.. She later died of Leukemia but before dying, she suffered greatly.:
Marie Curie sacrificed something very important to her just to study what she had discovered.
“She died a famous woman denying, (14)
her wounds, (15)
denying, (16)
her wounds came from the same source as her power.” (14-17)
Marie gave up her life in order to fully understand Radium and Polonium. The quote from the poem says, she denied till the very end. She didn’t want to stop what she was doing even though she knew she was suffering from radiation sickness. Because her life ended due to radiation, many scientists came to the conclusion that radiation was very harmful to the human body. At that time scientists and doctors sold items that contained many radioactive materials. Because of Marie dying to radiation sickness, doctors and scientists realized what was wrong and stopped selling radioactive items.
Cheryl Strayed did not sacrifice something as important as her own life. On the other hand, she gave up something that could have decided whether she lived or died. She was giving up her energy on carrying monster, her backpack, rather than making it lighter and using her energy for hiking. She is focusing to much on what she has on her than the hike itself. She is making her priority the backpack instead of hiking the PCT.
“I squatted and grasped its frame more robustly and tried to lift it again. Again it did not move. Not even an inch. I tried to lift it with both hands, with my legs braced beneath me, while attempting to wrap it in a bear hug, with all of my breath and my might and my will, with everything in me. And still it would not come.” (Strayed 42-43).
This quote shows how much effort she has to put even to even try and carry the backpack. WIll it be worth it to use all her energy on carrying the backpack rather than on the trail? Since she is using too much energy on the backpack, if something bad was to happen, she wouldn’t be able to react quick enough. An example is if a bear or mountain lion was to appear. Will it kill her?
In both these pieces of literature, the main characters Marie Curie and Cheryl Strayed had a lot in common. They experienced a lot of the same feelings. They suffer from physical pain and sacrifice. Although they did not live identical lifes, both had similar experiences.

Wild is about a young woman who loses her mother to cancer, and decides to hike the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail). “Power” is a poem about a woman named Marie Curie that discovers two elements, Radium and Polonium. They both are strongly motivated, sacrifice part of themselves and endure physical pain
In Wild, the main character, Cheryl Strayed, constantly suffers from physical pain. Throughout the book she always talks about how she is suffering and tired. The reason she is constantly injured is because she decided to take a really long hike that contains mountains with a variety of terrains, with desert and snow being two of them.
