Selling Science (Antifreeze)
Antifreeze
Description of the Project
We chose the topic Antifreeze since we read a story of a mom accused of poisoning her son by making him drink Antifreeze since it is toxic. We basically did research on what Antifreeze is made of and what it can do to a person if consumed. We then chose to make a children's book about Antifreeze. After that we then decided to contact someone who works with Antifreeze to tell us more about it. We then entered this information into a podcast.
Your Essential Question
What is Antifreeze?
Your Pitch
We wanted to teach other people what Antifreeze can do people and the environment if not used correctly. Antifreeze is a very dangerous solution that should be handled correctly. It is meant to be used for cars and not for people, which means DON'T TASTE IT!
Briefing
Link to our Briefing: https://docs.google.com/a/hightechhigh.org/file/d/0B1f0UzXzZbLNUkozbkhwaHVZSTg/edit
- The briefing was basically trying to make a news article about our topic. We added an interesting article about a mom being accused of poisoning her son.
Teacher for a Day Lesson
TFAD Link: https://docs.google.com/a/hightechhigh.org/file/d/0B1f0UzXzZbLNTHo5RElLQlprZk0/edit
-For our Teacher for a Day Lesson we decided to teach about Antifreeze through a children's book. I drew the pictures in the book and I thought it looked really nice. A link to a picture of the front cover is above this.
Chemistry Demo Handout
Chem Demo Handout: https://docs.google.com/a/hightechhigh.org/file/d/0B1f0UzXzZbLNWDlxSEU4V2hOVFU/edit
-Our document shows what our chem demo is about. It is basically testing the difference of the boiling and melting point of both water and Antifreeze.
Podcast

-Out podcast was greatly organized and was done greaty. The link above takes you to our podcast script.
Reflection
1) What did you learn as a result of your work in this project? -I learned so much about Antifreeze. I learned how important it can be and how dangerous it is. It helps a person keep his car working, by making it more efficient. It keeps the car from overheating and freezing. While it can help cars it can also be very dangerous. It is highly toxic and should be handled carefully.
2) How did critique and revision change your end products?
-Critique and revisions really improved our end products. We had several mistakes that kept our work from being great. With the corrections me made, our work really improved from good to great. I was really proud about what we ended up with.
3) How did you grow as a result of your participation in this project?
-I felt like I did a decent amount of work but could have done more. I did Most of the Audio Logs and the transcription. This was quite a bit of work but I felt like it was not enough. I felt like I could a little bit more to do as mush as my teammates.
4) If you were to give advice to next year’s students, what advice would you give to them?
-I would tell them to keep up with the work they are assigned because if they fall behind it becomes to much work to fast.
5) Scientists go through a process of trial and error. Describe your own experience with trial and error as it relates to the briefing, teacher for a day lesson, chem demo, and/or podcast.
-There was a lot of trial and error, mostly in Teacher for a Day. This was because i'm not really that great at presenting. I kept trying by myself until i eventually knew what to say. In the end it turned out pretty great.
6) Make a list of all the chemistry vocabulary you used in this project.
-Ethylene Glycol
-Enzymes
-Boiling and Freezing Point
